Frequently Asked Questions

Which OneSails Optimist sail is right for me?

It comes down to two choices. First the cut, which follows your level: Standard for sailors building consistency, Advanced for active club and regional racers, and Advanced Semi-Radial for those competing at the top. Then the model within that cut, matched to your weight and the conditions you sail most. If you’re unsure, your nearest OneSails loft will recommend the right combination.

Both use horizontal cross-cut panels. The Standard has a forgiving, stable profile that absorbs small mistakes — ideal while a sailor is still developing. The Advanced tightens the entry and exit angles, so it points higher and feels more responsive, but it asks for more precise sheet work in return because it doesn’t absorb mistakes the same way. The Advanced suits more active sailors who trim constantly.

It uses a radial cut in the lower section with a plain upper panel, giving maximum sensitivity and the most precise boat handling in the range. It rewards sailors who already have strong feel on the sheet and helm — typically those racing at national and international level.

Each cut comes in several models tuned to sailor weight and wind. The Standard range runs Light, Medium, Medium Plus, and Heavy Plus; the Advanced range (GM, GMP, AH, AHP) and the Semi-Radial range (GMR, XMR, MPR) have their own weight-matched options. Tell your loft the sailor’s weight and usual conditions, and they’ll point you to the right model.

Absolutely. They’re designed and built to the official Optimist class rules and are raced at the highest level of the class, including World and Continental Championships.

A sail’s life depends on how often it’s used, its UV exposure, and how it’s stored. Treated well — rinsed, dried, and rolled rather than crumpled — a OneSails Optimist sail holds its shape through demanding seasons of racing. Full guidance is in the OneSails use, care and maintenance manual.
