OneSails’s 4T FORTE technology is now on board the Neoliner Origin project, which offers genuinely decarbonized maritime cargo services based on the efficiency of using wind as the primary means of propulsion.
OneSails and Flexon Composites, both leading Italian companies in the design and production of high-performance, fully recyclable sails, have joined as strategic partners of the Neoliner Origin project, the largest new-generation wind-powered cargo vessel (140 m LOA).
Thanks to the exclusive 4T FORTE technology, developed and produced entirely in Italy by Flexon Composites exclusively for OneSails, Italian innovation and excellence are now at the heart of one of the most advanced initiatives for the decarbonization of international maritime transport.
The vessel entered service at 02:37 on 16th October 2025 for its first transatlantic crossing along the route Saint-Nazaire (FRA) – Saint-Pierre et Miquelon (FRA) – Halifax (CA) – Baltimore (round trip), marking a new era for commercial sailing.
Made in Italy Technology for a Sustainable Transition
Maritime transport is currently responsible for 7% of global oil consumption and 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, with forecasts projecting up to 17% by 2050. Given the scarcity of alternative fuels, wind propulsion stands out as an immediately available, clean, and renewable solution.
In this context, OneSails has supplied three headsails (450 m² each) to the project, manufactured by Flexon Composites using the exclusive 4T FORTE technology, which is fully recyclable, and the result of cutting-edge research and production processes based in Italy.
These lightweight, durable, and highly aerodynamic headsails play a crucial role in the overall performance of the wind propulsion system. The participation of OneSails and Flexon Composites represents a tangible example of sustainable Made in Italy excellence capable of making an impact on a global scale.
“Playing an active role in this revolution means bringing made in Italy expertise to the heart of the green transition in maritime transport,” commented Dede De Luca, CEO of OneSails. “This project embodies the recognition of a virtuous and pioneering innovation journey that began over 18 years ago and has continued in its commitment to developing advanced and sustainable technology, effectively driving the decarbonization of the nautical and maritime sectors and demonstrating that performance, reliability, safety, and respect for the environment can coexist in a single solution.”
Neoliner Origin: The Ship of Tomorrow
The Neoliner Origin project was created by Neoline, a company founded by Merchant Navy officers, with the aim of offering genuinely decarbonized maritime services, based on the efficiency of using wind as the primary means of propulsion.
The ship integrates a unique combination of advanced technical solutions:
- Two “Solid Sail” rigid wings of 1,050 m² each, mounted on tilting 90 m carbon masts (reducible to 41.5 m to pass under bridges).
- Two of the three OneSails headsails in 4T FORTE of 450 m² each, designed and produced in Italy, providing essential thrust and aerodynamic balance.
- An advanced weather routing system developed by D-ICE.
- A hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system (3,300 + 900 kW) for maneuvers and situations not covered by sails.
The total sail area is 3,000 m². The combination of operational efficiency and innovative technology allows for a reduction up to 80% in fuel consumption and emissions.
Features and Services
- Cargo capacity: 1,200 linear meters or 265 TEU, up to 5,300 tons
- Inaugural route: Saint-Nazaire (FRA) – Saint-Pierre et Miquelon (FRA) – Halifax (CA) – Baltimore (round trip)
- Competitive door-to-door services, reducing land transport and related emissions
- Stable prices, independent of fuel costs
- Reduced impact on marine ecosystems, with lower underwater noise and environmental risks
“The decision to select our 4T FORTE technology for the Neoliner Origin project,” explained Piercarlo Molta, CEO of Flexon Composites and head of OneSails’ R&D, “was motivated not only by environmental sustainability criteria but also by the need to ensure the highest standards of reliability even in extreme operating conditions. The sails made with 4T FORTE technology will be subjected to exceptionally high loads, and their design is the result of months of in-depth analysis, advanced simulations, and rigorous testing.”
Timeline
